I am a tech optimist. The bright side of ubiquitous connectivity and computing spans across life changing innovation for individuals to climate change solutions for the planet.

The metaverse is no exception. New use cases emerge in healthcare and education, all of which surely will help improve lives. I can’t wait to see more, can’t wait to be part of building the new.

We do, however, need to make sure these new platforms are kept open, transparent, and to some extent even regulated.

The MIT Technology Review article about Facebook and Ray-Ban unpacks relevant points.

Personally, I admire many of the tech giants. They have created the very fabric with which we develop democracy, transparency, education, and social networks. Unnuanced and even untruthful bashing of “big tech” has become fashionable. That’s a problem.
That’s not to say that their critics’ arguments always lack merit, we do need to stay alert on all aspects of free speech and personal integrity.

Let’s just try and stay factful and balanced when shaping ethical governance of the building of the new.
