Edge computing
Edge computing is coming your way. The need for real-time processing in a 5G, AI, and IoT dominated contexts, is one of the key drivers of this new kind of “local computing”.
Edge computing concepts and platforms have been invested into especially since the last five years, and now it seems we are just on the verge of a breakthrough. For example, Arpit Joshipura, The Linux Foundation’s general manager of networking, predicts not without their own stake in the game, that “edge computing will overtake cloud computing by 2025”.
The foundation’s “LF Edge Project”, supported by Google, has been deployed in industrial use cases for years, “integrating IIoT, sensors, machines, ML/AI tools-processes-workloads, and clouds with the current industrial production systems and levels, as per ISA-95”.
The most recent developments in industry adoption of Microsoft’s Azure Edge Zones and AWS IoT for the Edge also provide solid proof of take off.
Exciting new scenarios ahead, as we connect centralized concepts of cloud computing scalability and real-time edge computing. Finally, we can envision truly “turning on the lights” of a fully connected and digital world.
